Styling At Sandals

We're taking you on a trip to the western end of the island, where the gorgeous ladies of Sandals received elegant 'dos (and complementing make-up too) courtesy of the stylists at the Red Lane spas of Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean. Under The Dryer shares the 'deets' on how to recreate their fab hair looks. (Photos: Karim Chambers & Orville Dawson)

Bridal Bliss

Anna-Kay Wholas

Concierge Manager, Sandals Montego Bay

Stylist Wendy McFarlene of the Sandals Montego Bay Red Lane Spa is quite the expert at creating elegant hairstyles, so she's often called upon by ladies looking for the perfect wedding, cocktail or formal 'do. Today she shares the steps for her 'Bridal Bliss' look which she demonstrates on concierge manager Anna-Kay Wholas for our Under The Dryer team

Wendy's Tools:

A curling iron, Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray, shampoo and conditioner, Paul Mitchell Firm Style Freeze and Shine Super Spray, hairpins and a blow dryer.

The Routine:

Anna-Kay's hair is first shampooed with Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner, then misted with Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray and blow-dried to ensure that it is sleek and easier to style. Next, Wendy sections her hair to create a small fringe at the front, and a hairpin is used to keep it away from the rest. Hair was again sectioned, and twisted loosely from the front to the back (do this as though you are creating cornrows, and leave about two inches at the end to create spiral curls). A curling iron is then used to create spiral curls at the back of Anna-Kay's hair. Wendy then uses hairpins to secure them stylishly, and finishes with Paul Mitchell Firm Style Freeze and Shine Super Spray for an added boost.

Up And Away

Ann-Marie Gayle

Income auditor, Sandals Carlyle

Sandals resorts are popular destination wedding venues, so naturally, the aestheticians within their Red Lane spas have perfected the art of creating romantic 'dos. Sherna Campbell of Sandals Royal Caribbean was happy to recreate one of her 'full up-dos' for our team, and Ann-Marie Gayle was equally pleased to oblige.

Sherna's Tools:

Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner, a curling iron, hair pins, a blow dryer, and Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray.

The Routine:

Sherna shampoos Ann-Marie's hair with Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner, then blow-dries it for smoothness and manageability. She then parts a small section of her hair and applies Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray ahead of creating spiral curls with a curling iron. This step was repeated until her hair was completely curled, after which her hair was then swept from the front to the sides (from ear to ear) and pinned securely in place. Sherna then used hairpins to create a chic up-do.

Sleek & Smooth

Nickeisha Anderson

Concierge Manager, Sandals Royal Caribbean

Coleen Allen of Sandals Royal Caribbean tells our team that creating versatile hair looks are her specialty, and she's also very good at matching hairstyles to her clients' personalities. Today Nickeisha Anderson, the property's concierge manager, pops in for a quick shampoo job, and Coleen instantly gets to work.

Coleen's Tools:

A blow dryer, flat iron, Paul Mitchell shampoo, conditioner, and Super Clean Hair Spray.

The Routine:

Nickeisha's hair is first cleansed with Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner, after which Coleen blow-dries it to increase manageability before commencing the styling process. Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray, which gives hair radiance and a light, firm hold is then misted onto her tresses. Coleen then follows up with a ceramic flat iron for straightening, then creates a side part and combs the hair down over both sides of Nickeisha's face to complete the look.

French Inspiration

Dawn Smith

Executive Assistant Manager, Sandals Montego Bay

A classic French twist is always a great option for special occasions, and Sandals Montego Bay stylist Georgina Nepaul enjoys creating this elegant hairstyle for her clients. Executive assistant manager Dawn Smith would like to try the look, and Georgina happily obliges.

Georgina's Tools:

A blow dryer, hairpins, Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray and a curling iron.

The Routine:

Hair is first cleansed with Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner, then misted with Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray and blow-dried. Georgina then uses a curling iron to create spiral curls, which she sweeps behind the ears. She then twists the curls, and tucks them over each other and into a chignon. She also secures the French twist with hairpins, leaving the curls visible at the top. Curls are then separated and allowed to fall to one side of the face, a section at the front is curled towards the side, then rosettes and gem stones are attached to the back of the twist to complete the look.

All locked Up

Suzett Irving

Housekeeper, Sandals Negril

Suzett loves her locks, and luckily for her, hairstylist Wendy McFarlene is very good at creating stylish 'dos for dreadlocked clients. Under The Dryer shares the steps for creating her sectioned up-do.

Wendy's Tools: Hairpins and an oil sheen spray (optional).

The Routine:

Wendy divides the hair into two sections from ear to ear, secures the top half to keep it away from the back, then pulls the back section of the hair around the ears and uses hairpins to secure it into a bun. Following this, the top section is loosened and used to create another bun at the crown with hairpins to secure it in place, which completes the look. You may mist with your favourite oil sheen spray for added shine if desired.

Half-Up, Half-Down

Marcia Kow

Executive Administrative Assistant, Sandals Carlyle

Sometimes women want to get glammed up 'just because'... and today Sandals Carlyle's executive administrative assistant Marcia Kow is in the mood for something fab. Her stylist Coleen Allen decided on a half-up, half-down look to show off the highlights, length and volume of her hair. The look, she explains, can work for special occasions, and can even be adapted to suit a corporate setting. Here's how it's done.

Coleen's Tools:

A blow dryer, curling iron, Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray, Paul Mitchell Holding Spray and hairpins.

The Routine:

Starting with clean hair, blow-dry hair and divide it into two sections from ear to ear.

Pin the top half in place and spray the bottom half with Paul Mitchell Super Clean Hair Spray, then use a large-barrel curling iron to create large, loose curls. After this, remove pins from the top half and apply hair spray, then curl it with the curling iron.

Use hairpins to separate both sections, ensuring that the hair remains in place. Coil the hair strands and tuck them in with hairpins to create a loose bun. Using your fingers, separate the curls into smaller spirals and spray hair with Paul Mitchell Firm Style Freeze and Shine Super sprays to complete the look.
